Two ex-pupils of the Greymouth Marist Brothers’ High School, Masters K. Bonisch and L. Zampese, leave to-day to enter the Novitiate of the Marist Order at Highden, Manawatu.

The Hon. J. O’Brien (Minister of Transport) arrived in Christchurch from the North on Saturday, and will spend several days there. He will be a speaker in the Christchurch East bye-election campaign.

Mr T. J. Fitzgerald, of the Railways Department, Greymouth, has received notice of transfer to Blenheim. Mr H. G. Williams, of Methven, and formerly of Greymouth, will replace him.

The engagement is announced of Sergeant James R. Robertson, R.N.Z. A F eldest son of Mr and Mrs Donald Robertson, of Waiuta, to Mary, daughter of Mr J. Caird and the late Mrs Caird. Oroia, Wanganui.

A London cable states that a New Zealand member of the Royal Navy, F. N. F. Johnston, of Wellington, son of Mr Justice Johnston, married Miss Marion Crawford, of the Isle of Skye, at Brompton Oratory. Johnston was at the evacuation of Dunkirk and also in the recent Oran landing.

Freeman and Major D. Purvis (Wellington L The D.S.O. has been awarded to Major T. H. Bevan, whose wife, Mrs G. Bevan, resides at Onehunga. Major Bevan left for overseas v ith the Second Echelon and was mentioned in despatches early in 1942. He was reported wounded in the present Libvan campaign. He had twelve'years’ service with the Territorial Force before he enlisted in January, 1941.

A London cable slated: Sub-Lieut. Dudley Reid, of Wellington, the only New Zealander so far holding the George Medal and Bar, is now a father. His wife gave birth to a son on January 20. Sub.-Liegt. Reid won his decoration for bomb disposal work. He has since been at sea in a-jnine-layer, a destroyer, anl a corvette. He is now a first lieutenant in a corvette.

Staff-Sergeant C. G. Coxall, N.Z. T.S N.C.Oi, in charge of the Records Section, Army Office, Greymouth, left for Wellington on Saturday, on transfer. On Friday he was met by members of thd staff, and presented with a fountain pen on their behalf by Captain A. R. Curtis (Assistant Area Officer). Staff Sergeant Coxall will be succeeded by Corporal R. A. L. Kav, N.Z.T.S., who has returned from duty at Nelson Headquarters.

A London cablegram states: When Squadron-Leader Don Kingaby, D.F.M., with two bars, shot down a ;second enemy plane within two days over France on Thursday, he had in the as “a guest pilot” Squadron-Leader D. Kain, who wanted "to get his hand in,” and he did so by shooting down a Fockewulf 190. Squadron-Leader Kain is a distant relative of “Cobber” Kain, and flew in the same squadron with him in France, after which he fought over Malta, where he was injured by a bomb. He has only just been permitted to fly again.

The Minister of Defence ( Hon. F. Jones) has announced the award of a Bar to Distinguished Service Order for Brigadier H. K. Kippenberger, D. 5.0., whose wife, Mrs R. Kippenberger, resides at Rangiora. Before enlisting in Christchurch in September, 1939, Brigadier Kippenoerger served for two and a half years with the First N.Z.E.F. and fourteen years with the New Zealand Territorial Force. He sailed with the First Echelon and was promoted Brigadier in 1941. He was wounded m December, 1941, and was subsequently awarded the D.S.O. and mentioned in dispatches.
