WOODEN-SOLED SHOES

SAMPLES IN CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 24. Two samples of wooden-soled shoes made in New Zealand have been received by Mr. J. A. East, managing director of Sucklings Brothers Ltd. One is a sandal with the sole hinged on a leather strap in two places, and the other is a shoe with the sole made in segments of New Zealand wood. Mr. East said, that the snoes were purely experimental at the moment, and had been made as a result of interest in a previous story in tne “Star-Sun” on wooden soles. tne sandal had been made in Wellington by a man who was at present in the Army, and had been experimenting with that type of footwear for some The shoe was made by an Auckland firm and had a flexible wooden sole consisting of segments of wood cemented together. Those who had worn the shoe declared that it was very comfortable. He himself considered that the samples were very creditable eiforts. Mr. East said that the samples or wooden soles ne was expecting from Britain had not yet arrived. He added that a returned soldiers wife had called on him recently to show him a pair of wooden-soleu shoes she had made herself. She had painted them, very nicely, and had made a'good job.
