CHILE’S BREAK

WITH AXIS POWERS LONDON, Jan. 20. The Chilean Senate last night approved the breaking off of diplomatic, relations between Chile and the Axis by a three to one majority. The President (Dr Rios), who is expected to make a broadcast statement, has already taken steps to place strategic ports and min’ng centres under martial law. Around-up of suspects and the closing down of Axis organisations are expected to follow. The Chilean Ambassador at Rio de Janeiro, called on Argentine’s Foreign Minister, Senor Aranha. and intimated that Chile had broken off relations with the Axis. He said that President Rios signed the decree at 9 a.m. to-day. The Chilean Ambassador at Washington formally notified Mr Sumner Welles that Chile has broken diplomatic relations with Germany, Japan and Italy.
