NEW U.S. TANKER
MYSTERY OF SINKING. PORTLAND (Oregon) Jan. 18. The tanker Schenectady had completed its trial run without fault before the sinking. The only plausible theory of the disaster, which came from an unofficial source, is that a recent flood might have piled up a sand ridge under the dock, and he ship’s keel may have broken on this ridge, as the tide receded.
