HARIHARI NOTES

Mr 1 Jim Fleming of Kokatahi, spent the week-end in Hariharii and has left on his return.. Mr and Mrs Harry Diedrich of Kokatahi are on a visit to Mr and Mrs W. Levett of Herepo. . * Miss Margaret Graham of Waiho, is on a visit to Harihari, and is thf>- , guest of her mother, Mrs Jack Graham. I The Plunket Nurse of Hokitika has been on her annual visit to Harihari, , and leaves on return to-morrow. Mrs G. McMillan, senr., of’ Christchurch, is on. a visit to this township. looking up old friends and relatives. Driver Arthur McMillan of the North Island is visiting relatives in this township. Fairly good progress is being made with the work of restoring the Big Wanganui River bridge. Abput thirty** men are at present employed on the i job. Anothei- twenty nien are expected here in the coming week. The Public Works Department has quire a numbfer of huts erected on the north side of the bridge, along with a large up-to-date cook-house and dining room, with hot and cold water installed, also bath-rooms and an additional room for drying the men’s working clothes. A start was made on Monday to work two shifts of 12 ’ hours each. The first shift starts at 4 a.m., lasting until noon, and the second shift is from mid-day until 8 ,p.m. At the present, two 60 ft. pile#, have been driven. Difficulty is being experienced in driving the piles owing to the river bed consisting of large stones, some- of which are estimated at from two to five tops in weight. ■ A punt is being constructed by the Westland County Council. It 1 is Being built about a mile above the bridge, i opposite Bell’s Creek. Good progress is .being made. The building of the punt is in the hands of L. Fraser, of Karamea, along with Messrs Weenink and Lucas. If the weather permits, the punt -should be in working order bv the second week in December. Despite having to change from, one . ’bus to another on either side' of the 4 bridge, a large number of people continue to travel both ways. Some are not too pleased at the manner the cage is worked at times. Often when the cage arrives on the south side it i-.s not slowed down sufficiently to ayoid coming in contact with the •bridge, with the result, shocks are reported by travellers,
