A big slip came down on Costello’s Hill, between Westport and Charleston on the main coastal road on Tuesday afternoon, about a chain in length .and running rail high. Passengers and mails by the service bus had to cross the slip to a bus on the other side, causing a delay in arrival. Mr. F. Felix, of Christchurch, who lived here for many years is visiting Westport. ' Mr. A. E. Davenport, West Coast Lighting Controller, is visiting West1 port. Miss Eila Simonsen, who has been spending her annual leave with relatives in Dunedin has returned to Westport. ; Mr. G. B. Carr, of Wellington, and formerly of Westport is spending a few days in Westport a's the guest of Mr. J. Ouwejan, Russel Street. Mr. p. S'exton, acting as nightwatchman for the Railway Department, fell on Sunday night and broke his ankle. He was admitted to hospital for treatment and is progressing satisfactorily. A largely' attended meeting of all Wardens was held in the Town Hall last evening. Mr. W. A. Smith presided and his Worship the May'or was also on the dias. Mr. Davenport. Lighting Controller, gave a lengthy resume of recent regulations in connection with lighting in the town, and the whole of the area under his control. The area was a large one and ■extended from the southern-most part of this coast and included Grey, Buller, Motueka and Nelson in the north. Mr. Davenport gave a comprehensive and lucid interpretation on the consolidation of all regulations from the commencement of the war to the present time and was accorded a most attractive hearing for an interesting discourse. Many questions on most points were asked and satisfactorily answered. Mr. W. A. Smith, the chief warden addressed the meeting and congratulated- wardens on the excellent handling of the last blackout trial. He said that there was a considerable , -improvement on former tests. The wardens' roll was - called and the splendid attendance ev’denced the keen interest evinced in the E.F.S. by all connected with it. Wardens are to be issued with booklets, which briefly and concisely outline the duties of E.P.S. wardens. It was stated that one hundred “tin hats” had been ordered by the Borough Council for distribution to members. The chief warden thanked' all for attending and closed the meeting at 9.30 p.m. It is intended to block off Russell Street, between Brougham and Lyndhurst Streets, on Saturday next to enable a patriotic basketball tournament to be held. Teams are entered from all clubs in the Buller district. Knramea Go 1 ! Club’s championship resulted as follows: — Senior men. , R. Tunnicliffe beat G. Hawes at the 40th hole. Junior men. D. Simpson beat R. Hird 5 and 4. Ladies, Mrs. Hodgson beat Mrs. Simpson 2 and 1. The annual match between the President’s v. Secretary’s teams is to be played on Saturday. Finalists in the Westport Ladies Golf championships next . week-end are: Senior, Miss Risk v. Miss Robertson; Intermediate: Mrs Holder v M.iss Hay-Mackenzie: Junior. Miss Park-* inson v. Mrs. Scadden. It was previously reported that Miss Parkinson had defeated Miss Payne in the final of the latter competition. but this should have- read semi-final.
