BATTLESHIP SUNK
Italian Claim
[Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] LONDON, October 6.
The Rome radio claims that an Italian submarine sank an American battleship of the Mississippi class, about three hundred miles off the West African coast, abreast of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Four torpedoes hit the ship, which was seen to sink. The Navy Department at Washington has declined to comment on the Italian claim.
