ELEVEN JAP PLANES LOST - In Guadalcanal Raid AND HEAVY CRUISER DAMAGED. [Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Rec. 9.30.) SYDNEY. October 7. The United States Navy, in a communique, just issued from Washington records the latest Japanese losses in the Solomons Islands'area, stating that eleven more Japanese have been destroyed by the United States Air Force. The communique states that a small group of enemy bombers, which were preceded by 30 Zero fighter ’planes attempted to raid the American installations on Guadalcanal Island on Saturday, last. Navy “Wildcat” fighters shot down nine of the Japanese fighter 'planes, while two of them were destroyed by. antiaircraft fire. The enemy bombers turned back without dropping their bombs. In ten ten days up to Sunday last, losses inflicted o.ij the Japanese in the Solomons Islands area included sixtythree ’planes destroyed and others damaged; three cruisers damaged; one destroyer damaged; one seaplane tender damaged; and one large transport set afire and probably sunk. The United States Navy communique just issued at Washington stated that in the Solomons Islands area a Japanese heavy cruiser was damaged by the American Air Force. The cruiser was hit at least twice with torpedoed, and once with bombs. The United States Naw adds that Navy and Marine Corps dive-bombers also attacked several Japanese destroyers, with unobserved results. Two American ’planes were lost in this attack. The communique says: "The Japanese cruiser and destroyers were attacked while they were landing enemy troop reinforcements' on Guadalcanal Island. Still More Japanese LAND ON GUADALCANAL. The United States Naw communique just issued at Washington, admits that there have been further Japanese landings on Guadalcanal Island, the main United States marine base in the Solomons Islands. America dive-bombers bombed and s.trafed enemy troops and supply dumps on Guadalcanal. There had been little activity the ground forces on Guadalcanal up till Sunday last, but the enemy has continued to land small detachments of troops under cover of darkness..
