At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council on Monday there were present the Mayor (Mr. A. rt. Elcock), Crs. W. H. Stopforth, T. W. Duff, C. Caliari, S. G. Havill and D. P Stuart. Apologies were received from Crs J. K. Aitken, E. W. Heenan and L. Ross. A donation of £l/1/was made to the Royal Humane Society. J. V. Conning N.Z.E.F., wrote in appreciation of two parcels forwarded to the Middle East. The Valuation Department advised that the owner of assessment 4/111/274 had applied for a revaluation and the Department was willing to reduce the unimproved value from £325 to £275 but the owner had offered the section to the Government for £2OO, the price paid for it two years ago. The Department would be glad to know whether the Council desires to take any action at the Assessment Court. It was decided to take no action. Mr. E W. Heenan wrote requesting that a site in Weld Street, opposite the Hotel Westland be reserved for- a stopping place for the Kanieri-Rimu bus service. The matter was referred for a report to Crs. Stuart, Duff and Caliari. Receipts were shown as £1,148/7/1, and expenditure £1,034/9/7. Accounts amounting to £853/4/8 were passed. E. M. Lakin, lorry driver was granted leave of absence, having joined the National Reserve. The Medical Officer ot Health advised that samples from the town water supply had been analysed and proved entirely satisfactory. The Hospital Board advised of its levy, it being £163 less than last year. The Library Committee asked for repairs to stop leaks in the building. The Minister of Internal Affairs advised that for the duration of the war the Council was empowered to fill any vacancy in its membership. Ine /abattoir report stated stock slaughL ered in June comprised 22 cows, 19 heifers, 67 bullocks, 192 sheep, 29 lambs, 29 pigs, 25 calves. Condemned, nil. Fees amounted to £B7/10/3.
