CONSTABLE IN DOCK

REMANDED ON ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE WHANGAREI, July 22. Before two Justices of the Peace at Kaitaia, this morning, Constable H. H. Barrett, Mangonui, was charged with, the attempted murder of a Dalmatian, Mate Soko Urlich, at Lake Ohia, on Monday. Barrett was remanded in custody to appear at Kaitaia on Friday.

Urlick is single, and a gumdigger, aged 45, and is stated to have receiv. ed his injuries some distance from a shack which he occupies, about 11 miles from the main Kaitaia-Man-gonui road. The incident is said to have occurred late on Monday afternoon.

The injured man was brought to the Mangonui district hospital by his relations. He was in a sinking condition. Immediately after admission an operation for bullet wounds was performed. As the result of information received at Whangarei headquarters on Monday night, Inspector J. Fox and Detective Sergeant Finlay left hurriedly for Kaitaia. Following upon their investigations, Barrett was arrested . yesterday. Barrett, who is married, has been stationed at Mangonui for four years. Last week, he received notice of transfer _to Waiuku.

The condition of Urlich remains very serious. His depositions were taken at Kaitaia Hospital.
