HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA;, June 4. The death took place at an early hour this morning of Mrs Ellen Keow/n, wife Tof Mr. Thomas A. Keown, of the proprietary of Hokitika Guardian and Times.” The late Mrs Keown had been suffering from bronchitis and influenza for some days, but sudden de'ath, which took place in her sleep, caused a great shock to her family, and to a very wide circle of friends. The late Mrs Keown was of a generous nature, and extended help to many in need. Very general sympathy will be extended to the members of the family in their sudden loss. The late Mrs Keown was a native of Killea, County Waterford, Ireland, and was 64 years of age. She had resided in Hokitika for about 35 years, and was a niece of the late Mr. John Ahearn, one of the pioneers of the district. Besides her husband she leaves a family of two daughters, Mrs L. Wilson and Miss Tess Keown (Hokitika) and two sons, Edward (Hokitika) and Thomas (in military camp). She .’s .also survived by a brother and a sister w*ho reside in Ireland, .and there are two grand children.

Advice has been received in Hokitika of the death of Mr. John Dawn, of Dunedin, a former resident of Hokitika. The late Mr Dawn was well known here, where he carried on the trade of a baker. He was 60 years of age. He left for Dunedin about 20 years ago. Besides his wife he leaves a family of one son and one daughter. His son .is a prisoner of war in Germany. A brother resides in 'the Nelson district, and two sisters in the North Island.

A resident of Wataroa was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, and was (charged at the Magistrate’s Court, Hokitika, yesterday before Mr. A. E. Benjamin, J.P., with failing to render military service. Sergeant Brown, for the' Police, asked for a remand until Friday to enable the charge to be brought before the Magistrate. The remand was granted.

On the occasion of the appeal for the Liberty Loan, the County Chairman Mr. T. P. O’Neill consulted the members of the Council, with a view to helping the loan; and as a result the County resolved to invest £501) in the loan.

The Westland County district has been set the amount of £2,592 as its quota of the district allocation for the Patriotic Fund. The amount raised to date is £739/12/-. The borough of Hokitika is talso raising its quota successfully although the Liberty Loan appeal caused a lull in the incomings. On Saturday the senior football match here is at 2.45, between the local team and Celtic, Mr. Stewart being referee-, while at 1.30 p.m. School and Excelsior thirds meet, Mr Olson being referee. Mrs Neil occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of the Hokitika Women’s Institute. An invitation to (the Ruatapu Institute’s first birthday was accepted. A number of garments were handed .in for the Lady Galway Fund. A collection for soldiers’ parcels amounted to £l/5/6. .The President made an appeal for old rags for the Registered Nurses Association. Mrs Basset gave an interesting address and demonstration on the care of the skin and hair. Mrs Paterson sang two solos. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Mitchell, Anderson Paterson, Wallace, Stuart, Young and McGifford and Miss Wormington. . ± Mr W. E. Richards, proprietor of the Westland Printing Works, is a patient at the Westland Hospital, with an attack of influenza. Mr J. Richards of Hokitika, entered the Hospital on Tuesday, suffering from appendicitis. Mi' E.. Kirby of Harihari was a visitor to Hokitika on Wednesday; also Mr W. Clayton (Grey Valley), to attend the meeting of the Land Board. The Borough Council staff have been cutting down more trees in Cass Square during the past few days, near the pavilion, which were considered to be dangerous. Mi’ A. Ellis, an experienced bushman, supervised the felling of the trees, and has also felled a number of dangerous trees in the main avenue leading to the Cemetery. This task was an awkward one, as the trees had to be felled in such a way* as not to injure the graves or headstones in the vicinity. The job was completed with' out any damage. . appears to be satisfactory. Shops ! have been well stocked, and business I has continued to be brisk. Good sales of footwear are also reported.
