REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Corre<snonder.t3. REEFTON, June 3. A well-known resident, Mr J'ohn Cameron, better known as “Snowline Jack,” was found dead in his hut at Black’s Point by some neighbouring children. He was in Reefton last Thursday afternoon, and seemed to be in his usual health. It is considered by the doctor that he passed away on Friday night. He was a native of Victoria, 63 years of age, and had been in this district off and on for 40 years. He was an experienced masseur, and followed this as well as other occupations until rheumatism affected him. He was a single man. At the funeral, there was a large attendance. Rev. D. Evans conducted the service.

When the No. 9A Westland Manpower Committee sat at Reefton, 48 appeals were dealt with. Most of the appeals related to mining. Reservists were ordered to join the Home Guard.

Mr Thomas Malcolm of Dunedin formerly on the staff of the Waitahu Gold Mining Company, at Waitahu, is on a visit to Reefton as the guest of Mr T. and Miss Gilmer. Lieut. Philip Humphries, son of Mr and Mrs W. J. Humphries, Reefton, is here on leave from camp. Misses E. Williams and J. Gebbie. Christchurch, spent last week-end in Reefton with relatives.

Mr P. J. Scott, a miner, engaged at the Defiance Coal Mine, sustained injuries while at work through a fall of coal. He was attended by Dr. Wicken. The injuries are not serious.

The only match played in the Inangahua Rugby League -competition last 'week-end between Grey Valley a'nd Waitahu, proved a most interesting fixture, and the standard of play was high for so early in the season.
