RUNANGA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the Runanga Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on 'Tuesday evening. The Mayor, Mr. E. KenI nedy presided and Councillors pre- ; sent were S. O’Neill, C. Barrow and lA. Auldi An apology was received from Cr. Spark. Inward correspondence was received as satisfactory. iThe Secretary of the Baths Commu- ' tee. wrote asking the Council to sup--1 ply approximately half a ton of cement to repair the swimming batns, the cost of the cement to be paid during the next season. Cr. O’Neill ! moved and Cr. Auld seconded, that [ the cement be supplied to the Baths Committee, and Council to procure the sand. —Carried. Mrs. W. Rose wrote stating that the creek runnm, through the main street is blocked . and during heavy rain, the wait ' backs up flooding her property. Mr. . F. Pope advised that the creek be- ! hind his property has undermined his section.—Resolved that the matter be placed in the hands of the foreman. The National Service Department advised that two men ou Scheme 13 had been, transferred to railway repairs. Permission to • transfer two men from the domain 'to the borough was approved by the Service Department. The Foreman’s report stated 63 loads of gravel and nine loads of ashes had been carted. The foundation for the firebelll tower had been put down. The reservoir had been completed and cleaned, and an overflow pipe at outlet end was put in. There had been a slip over the pipe-line at Moody Creek mine-mouth. There was • danger of another slip and if this ocj curred the water .would be down in , Moody Creek Mine. A bridge at I the corner of Ward and Hall Jones i Streets was removed in preparation for the building of a concrete culvert, while old timber had been removed and digging in a drain starti ed to give required depth for culvert. The street near the swimming baths had been levelled and widened. Cr. Barrow moved, Cr. O’Neill seconded, that the Foreman’s report be received as satisfactory.—Carried. The Mayor suggested that the Council, procure the services of a carpenter to construct the bridge. It was de'cided that a notice be put in the I papers notifying the people of RuI nanga of the date on which the office 1 will be open for the issue of motor car licences. It was moved by the Mayor, and seconded by Cr. Auld, that the public be warned that action would be taken if refuse were thrown on the sides of roads on vacant sections or in drains. —Carried. Cr. Barrow asked if applications could be called for the position of general labourer, a motion to this effect being recorded b v Cr. O’Neill and carried.

A deputation from the Golf Club, consisting of Messrs Martin, J. ■JBowes and R. Armstrong, waited ol i the Council. Mr. Martin stated the Club considered the rental of £lO pei annum for the pavilion to be too high. Two years ago the Domain Board said they would be charged a purely nominal rental and for the past three years they had been paying £3 pel’ annum as ground rent One of the reasons they wanted the rental reduced was that the Football Clubs had not been charged for the use of the pavilion, while the I members of the Golf Club only playI ed for about 16 weeks and on Saturdays. The charge of £l3 per year thus worked out at 15s per day, and this was too much for the Club to pay as they only charged 25s per year Club fees. Further, a mower had been purchased, and in co-operation with the Foreman, the football area had been moved, thereby improving the site. Messrs Bowes and Armstrong spoke a few words on similar i Lines to Mr. Martin. The Mayor said he did not know ■ what the previous Council had promised the Golf Club, but the £lO was for the preservation and upkeep o£ the pavilion. The League Centre paid £lO for the use of the ground and pavilion. Cr. O’Neill stated that the Councillors were ignorant of the fact that the Club paid £3 ground rent at the time the rental was fixed. > , Cr. O’Neill moved and Cr. Barrow seconded, that rental be reduced to £5 for 12 months, the matter to be reviewed at the end of that periodThe motion .was carried.

Residents of Runanga will be pleased to know that the Westland Laundry. Ltd., Greymouth, will be pickjng up laundry on Wednesdays and returning Fridays. D. Manderson, Runanga, will supply all information and mice lists.—Advt.
