’FLU PREVENTATIVE

Australian Vaccine CANBERRA, June 3. A new vaccine, giving immunity against influenza for 12 months, has been developed by Dr. F. M. (Burnett, a well-known authority on virus diseases. Announcing this, the Minister tor the Army (Mr Forde) said that experiments on 120 Army, volunteers had proved that the vaccine was effective and harmless. Thousands of troops in camps had been inoculated on a voluntary basis, and the early results .were satisfactory. The final, results would decide whether the treatment should be extended to troops all over Australia. The Minister said that Dr. Burnett had prepared the vaccine from many viruses which were known to cause influenza. It was introduces into the body by spraying the nose and throat. Troops could be inoculated at the rate of 100 per dav. The vaccine afforded protection only against true influenza, which should not be confused with colds, sinustrouble, and ordinary nose and throat ailments.
