GREY SEWERAGE WORK

NOW AT A STANDSTILL. Reporting on the sewerage loan works for the year, the Greymouth Borough Engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid) stated:—“All work on the eastern side of Karoro Lake has been completed and sewerage eliminated from the lower reaches of Sawyer’s Creek. The main outfall sewer across Karoro Lake has been completed, except for the crossing of the main channel. In Erua Moana the work is three-fourths completed. Meanwhile, however, all work has been suspended consequent upon the men employed having been requisitioned for military and civil, defence works.”

In his monthly report to the Council the Engineer states:—"lmmediately the embargo on cement was lifted the men engaged upon tfle main sewer across Erua Moana were requisitioned for military and civil defence works and work meanwhile is therefore at a complete standstill except for some work required to complete the independent septic tank system serving the isolated groups of houses in Preston Road Adjacent to Arney Street Bridge. ' A sewer connection has been put in in Marlborough Street and . the sewer extension authorised in Marsden Road at the last meeting of the Council is nearing completion.” Dealing with drainage the report on the year’s work states:—“ln Cobden, a methodical elimination of open drains has been proceeded with, and whereas formerly there was one such on both sides of Cardwell Street, between Bright and Ward Streets, that on the south-east side has been closed as a result of sundry modifications. In Taylor Street but a short length of open drain still remains from Fox Street northeastwards. The object has been to carry on the work from Taylor Street northwards. All work done conforms to a future sew'erage system for Cobden.”

“Footpaths in Holland Settlement have been regraded and metalled as required and have received their first coat of tar to hold them and control the weeds until they can be finally sealed next season,” states the monthly report of the Greymouth Borough Engineer (Mr A. J l . Fairmaid). “Such treatment of these paths is a different matter to similar treatment given to, entirely new paths as these have been under consolidation for up to a couple of years, or more.”
