GREYMOUTH APPEALS The Greymouth Manpower Committee, Messrs W. Meldrum (chairman.), P. J. McLean, A, J’. Panther and C. F. Shapcott (secretary), sat at Greymouth yesterday when about fifteen miscellaneotte appeals against Territorial service were heard. E. J. Dumbleton appealed for John W. Ruston, baker. Mr E. B. E. Taylor said appellant was a baker at Blackball and was very short-staffed. It would be about a month before another assistant who was off sick would be fit enough to relieve reservist. The appeal was adjourned for a month for review. John William Burr, butcher and farmer (Mr A. M. Jamieson.) appealed for Allan John Burr, butcher's Appellant said his son was fully conversant with his butchery business at Ngahere. It was impossible to replace him. Another assistant was liable for service at any time and if his son went to camp he would have to close the business down. He delivered to Blackball, Ngahere, Moonlight and Nelson Creek. The only district that was not served by anyone else was Moonlight. He did not think the districts could be served by one man. The Appeal was adjourned sine The appeal was adjourned sine Adolph F. H. Bruhn appealed for Neil Louis Bruhn, butcher and grocer. Appellant said he conducted a business at Ruthergle'n. Owing to ill health he was unable to give much attention to the business which was largely carried on by reservist. His son did the heavy work and the delivery. The appeal was adjourned sine die. „ W. McLaughlin, farmer (Mr T. E. Coates) appealed on the grounds of undue hardship. Appellant said he had recently suffered a toss by river erosion. It was impossible to get someone to replace him and it would be very difficult for him to serve three months in camp. He was 44 years of age. The N.Z. Farmers’ Union wrote strongly supporting the appeal.. The appeal was adjourned sine die. m . C. R. Milne (Mr W. D. Taylor) appealed for Thomas Malcolm McIntyre, fisherman. Appellant said he was proprietor of the Norcasa Fish Shop, which be, had taken over two months ago. He had no previous experience in the trade and required recruit’s assistance. It would be absolutely impossible for him to carry on without' some experienced assistance. He had advertised for a man but had been unsuccessful. The appeal was adjourned sine die. TT An appeal by Richard James Henham; bushman-contractor, was heard in committee. F. F. Woodhouse appealed for (Herbert William Beams, electrical engineer’s apprentice. Appellant in evidence said that the position of his business was more acute than previously. He had made efforts to secure a substitute without success. He gave details of the work on hand, including work for sawmills, mines, hospitals, etc. He had six weeks’ work ahead of him. Recruit finished his appretensiceship in January. Appellant was the only qualified man on the West Coast for his type of work. The appeal was adjourned sine die. * Golden Coast Co-op. Dairy Coy. appealed for Bowkett, factory assistant. Mr E. Miller manager, said Bowkett was employed at Greymouth and was the only man capable of taking over the cream lorry run at a moment’s notice. He had three years’ cheese experience and had been employed at Greymouth for two years. There was a staff of four men at the factory. The Dairy also appealed for Frederick Walter Wright, factory assistant. , . 4 Mr Miller said reservist worked at Reefton and was a good worker. He was aged 32 years. Both appeals were adjourned sine die. ~ Margaret Lalor (Mr C. R. McGinley) appealed for Thomas William Lalor, butcher. Appellant said reservist ran the butchery business. It was impossible to replace him. She depended entirely on the business for her livelihood. She had two, young children. She had another son who worked for another butcher, driving a van. The appeal was dismissed, service to be postponed for two months to allow the other son to be trained' for the position. Grey Electric Power Board appealed for Athol Winton Adams, electrician, Frederick Trevor W. Lowe, linesman, and Robert Joseph McTaggart, meter reader. Mr W. S. McClymont, secretary, said Adams was a non-certificated man but was very capable. Without Adams the board would be in a poor position., Lowe had been employed by the board since 1937. McTaggart was meter reading and this was a difficult position to train a man for, owing to the board’s system of reading, and the nature of the board’s area. A girl could probably do the reading in the town. The first two appeals were adjourned sine die, that for McTaggart being adjourned two months for review. The Grey River Argus (Mr W. D. Taylor) appealed for Charles Evelyn (Broad, linotype operator. , Mr N. V. Lovell, manager, said there were three journeymen and one apprentice, while another man was training for the position. The two other journeymen had been called up for service and it was a question of which would be most suitable for the army. The appeal was dismissed. After an application for rehearing had been granted, Robert J’ohn Bradley (Mr W. D. Taylor) appealed for Francis Vincent Bradley, farm- manager. " Mr Taylor said when the appeal was last made it was thought reservist would be in camp for only three months, but now he would be in for the duration. Appellant could not carry on business by himself. He had a farm at Arahura. He wanted his son on the farm for the milicing season. He could milk the cows by machine but he could not strip them. Mr Shapcott suggested that stripping was a woman’s job. The appeal was dismissed with a view to reservist undergoing remedial treatment and applying for leave to do seasonal work. An appeal by Patrick John Fitzgerald for James Thomas Fitzgerald, farmer, was dismissed, service being postponed until May 31.
