Not lor many years has so much interest oeen evinced in civic matters as at present, as for two vacancies on tne Borougn Council there were four nominations up till noon to-cnay, as follows: —Heaton Claremont Peart (.nominated by A. Armstrong and W. E. Richards); John Kenneth Aitken (.nominated by O. Christian and M. Dawe); Garnet Cnaries Perry (nominated by S. J. Preston and S'. G. Havill); Lawrence Sebley Ross (nominated by 1. vy. Duff and C. Calarai). Mr. Peart, photographer, has been a resident ror many years, and was formerly on the staff of the Lands and Survey Department, and Secretary to Toe H. He is in charge of tne lending library for hospital patients conducted under Toe H. Mr. Aitken, licensee of the Pioneer Hotel, is well known throughout the district. Mr. Perry, Manager of Wm. Perry and Co., Merchants, and of the sawmilling and farming interests of the firm, is a brother of the late Mayor. Mr. Ross is a well known cycle dealer and repairer, and a member of. the Fire Brigade and Municipal Band. One or two other likely candidates have been also mentioned, and it is quite possible that there will be six candidates. One candidate has decided to place his views before the public at a meeting in the Town Hall, and invitations will be extended to other candidates also to express their views on the occasion. „ Sergt. Wireless-Operator-Gunner M. Mclntyre, completed his training in Canada, and is on active service in England. Prior to joining Air Force, he was on the staif of the Arahura Dairy Factory in HokitllFlight Sergeant S. H. Dromgoole, reported missing following air operations, was well known in Hokitika, where he was attached to the Forestry Department, and took more tnan a passing interest in civic and political matters. He was one of the most energetic members of the Housing Committee, and was largely responsible for the Government housing scheme here. His many friends throughout the West Coast will hope for a more reassuring report within the next few weeks. The following applications were granted at the Wardens Court.—J. E. Fitzgerald and Party, mineral license; Arahura Gold Dredging Coy., ordinary prospecting license; John Morrissey, surrender mining privileges- L. Haines, residence site in township of Kuma'ra; J. J. Mclntos and K. Hyndman, dam site; H. M. Owens, alluvial claim; James Strang and Thomas David Williams, consent to assignment of interest in coal leases. ....
