RAID ALARMS
AT DARWIN AND MORESBY. (Rec. 11.45.) CANBERRA, March 18. Air raid alarms were sounded both in Darwin and in Port Moresby on Tuesday, but no attacks developed. A communique dealing with these operations added: An enemy air reconnaissance was carried out on Tuesday over Ambasi, Dogura and in Sumari, in eastern New Guinea. Naval authorities all over Australia are empowered by the National Security Regulations to iz rder the immobilisation of all types of water craft—ship, .boat, yacht, barge, punt, rowing-boat, or any other—which could be used by an invader, even if the oniy course open is tljeir total destruction. Boats are now being collected and concentrated at selected places in harbours and estuaries along the coast. The Federal Government described the Tokio report that Japanese forces were preparing to land on Thursday Island as “groundless.” The Federal Government knows nothing of any clash north of Port Moresby, between Japanese and Australian troops. / Commonwealth Loan officials announced that the Liberty Loan re-
turns were almost complete. They showed that there were 240,285 subscribers for the total of £48,083,180. The Government appealed for £35,000.000, and aimed at 150,000 subscribers. ■>
