Chinese Seamen FROM TORPEDOED SHIPS. REFUSE TO GO TO SEA AGAIN. OTTAWA, March 16. Fifty-four Chinese sailors have been rescued from torpedoed ships. They have refused to sign on other ships. The Chinese; have argued the old Chinese custom, whereby a rescued person becomes for ever afterwards his rescuer’s ward. They also have argued that, when torpedoed, they were virtually deac. and were reborn agan .only when the rescue boat landed them in Canada. Therefore, they contended that they were Canadian citizens by birth, and were entitled to remain. The Canadian Immigration Authorities have rudely brushed the incarnation theory aside, and have ruled that the Chinese must e.ther go to sea or be deported.
