GESTAPO METHODS
Allegations Made AGAINST GOVERNMENT IN BRITAIN. (Rec. 1.21.) LONDON, March 16. The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, in a speech said: “We are not fighting the war to instal Gauleiters, nor to put the Gestapo in charge of Britain. The menace to Britain comes not solely from Germany. It comes from the gentlemen who would impose on Birmingham and other cities a form of government which is irresponsible, anonymous, and not as efficient as the municipality itself. Our system of local democratic government is attacked by people who are anxious to substitute it for the free institution of vested interests and bureaucratic control. We will not surrender our democratic rights to any authority imposed on us without our consent.”
