LONDON, February 23. A longish column of Japanese troops, advancing from Bilin to Kyaikto, at the head of the Gulf ot Martaban, has been successfully bombed and machine-gunned irom the air. This demonstration of air activity is reported by the British commander, General Hutton, to be having a good effect on the spirits ot the troops, who, though naturally tired, are fighting with more confidence because of the evidence of increased .air support. Japanese Draw Nearer TO SITTANG RIVER. (Rec. 9.45). LONDON, February 24. The “Daily Mail’s” Rangoon correspondent says: The Japanese are drawing nearer' to the Sittang River. Heavy fighting continues. The main Japanese thrust appears to be towards Kyaikto, which is virtually the mouth of the Sittang River.
