KUMARA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) At a special meeting of the Kumara Borough Council held on Monday evening there were present: — Mr A. B. Spiers (Mavor), Crs. May, Elley, Lawrence. Becker, Hunt, Fensom, Rodgers. Murphy and McNabb. The Mayor stated he had called the meeting to consider the purchase oi a pump for the water scheme. Messrs Levin and Co., through their agents, Messrs Renton and Co., offered their No. 913 Mvers “Bulldozer” pump tor £3B 10s f.0.b., Wellington, and stated that, provided the council developed power sufficient for the lift, if the pump would not then do the work, they woul.d take it back. Councillors thought this a fair offer and the Town Clerk was instructed to write Messrs Renton and Co., asking them to inform Levin and Co. that the council accented their offer under the above conditions. It was resolved that as many councillors as possible visit the site of the scheme on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Mayor brought up the matter of a reduction of the subsidy paid bv the Government for No. 13 Scheme men. He suggested that the council trv and have the full amount allotted tn the men bv the Government. He said the council could not nossiblv make up the amount. Cr. Murphy supported the Mayor’s remarks. Cr Rodgers moved and Cr Lawrence seconded that a letter of nrotest be sent to the Social Security Department on the reduction, pointing out the council’s inability to pav the increase. This was carried. It was resolved that the Town Clerk consult a solicitor as to the collection of arrears of rates.
