CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 15.. “I should like to inform the public that statements regarding parcels for prisoners of war, .as published in some papers in New Zealand, are inaccurate in detail, and are premature,” said the Chairman of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and N.Z. Red Cross Society, Dr. J. Leslie Will, to-night. The Council, said Dr. Will,, “is working in close co-operation with_ tfie Government and Is offering every assistance it can to facilitate quick commumcation between prisoners of war and their next-of-kin It is also deeply interested in the dispatch of parcels to prisoners "of whr. It has been stated that the Council approached the Government on the matter of sending parcels. This is absolutely incorrect The Council is endeavouring to carry out the wishes, of the Government, and to assist in every way so that each prisoner may receive a parcel as soon as possible. Any request under consideration concerning the parcels for prisoners of war has come to the Council from the Government,. and the Council is honoured to assist m every possible way. The Council has never presumed to instruct the Government as to ways and means that should bp adopted. The public can rest assured that in these troublesome times, when conditions alter throughout the world from day. to day. every possible means is being emploved to solve these difficult problems." Anzacs in Greece LONDON. September 14. Manv British and Anzac soldiers are still at large in Greece, most 01 them hiding in the mountains ot Northern Greece. A neutral traveller who has just left Greece says this in a letter to London friends He adds that Greek villagers feed the troops, often going without food themselves to give it to the soldiers. The villagers warn the troops when the Nazis are coming. The Germans have threatened the death penalty for anvone sheltering the Britishers. The 'Greeks’ dailv bread ration has been cut to about one-sixth of the normal needs, with the result that many faint at their work.
