LOWER MEAT PRICES

Butchers’ Complaint NOT ENOUGH PROFIT I

(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, July 25. Strong disapproval of the action of the Price Tribunal in fixation of the retail prices of meat was expressed at a meeting of the Master Butchers’ Association, this morning. Complaint was made that the trade had no opportunity of considering the price list before it was published. The following telegram was despatched to the Price Tribunal: “A fully-repre-sentative meeting o f the Master Butchers’ Association emphatically protests against the prices under the I present marketing conditions. The 1 prices are unfair and; unbalanced The action in publishing them before the Association had the opportunity to consider the draft was grossly unfair and discourteous to the trade.”

The general opinion of the meeting is that while some of the prices fixed could be considered reasonable, most were out of balance, and at the present prices of livestock, it would be impossible for the butchers to carry on.
