DENNISTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] The May meeting of the Denniston Women’s Institute was held on Monday evening. The motto, “Look Before You Leap,” was given by Mrs. H. Baird. Mrs. T. Muir gave the Golden Thread talk. Mrs. Blake presided in the chair. Competitions of the evening were won by Mrs. W. Thomas (special), Mrs. Lewis, 1; and Mrs. Coburn, 2. Social competition: Mrs. Gardiner and Mrs. Hill. Master W. Shand, student of Nelson Boys’ College, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shand. Master W. Lockhart is paying a visit to Denniston.

Mr. J. J. Corden, student of Christchurch Training College, is visiting his parents at Denniston. Mr. J. Walker, teacher, is at present on holiday at Denniston, where he is residing with his parents. The Burnett’s Face Women’s Labour Party held a grand ball in the Miners’ Hall on Friday night. Music was supplied by Mr. P. Cole, Mr. P. Blythe, Mr. F. Glendenning and Mr. R. Madden. Special mention must oe made of the lady saxophonist. The lucky spot waltz was won by Mr. E. Cooper and Miss E. Parker; Statue barn dance by Miss B. McGinty and Mr. S. Crawford; Monte Carlo, Miss E. Parker and Mr. R. Holbrook; Lucky numbers by Mrs. S. Crawford and Mr. A. Rodgers. A dainty supper was supplied by the Labour Party. The successful evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” The opening of the combined first aid lectures will commence on Sunday, May 25, at 10.30. Mrs. H. Banks, an old resident of the hill, is at present on a holiday, looking up old friends. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall, of Christchurch, are visiting Denniston.

The engagement was announced on Saturday of Monica, only daughter of Mrs. G. O’Keefe, and Herbert, only son of Mrs. J. Nicholls. Mr. W. Hills, student of Christchurch Training College, is at present visiting his parents at Denniston.

The third grade match between Denniston and Westport Technical resulted in a draw, 3 —3. Mr. J. Black, from Reefton, is visiting his parents at Denniston. Miss W. Hills is at present an inmate of the Westport Hospital. Her many school friends wish her a speedy recovery. The May meeting of the Marshallvale Women’s Institute was held in the Marshallvale Hall on Wednesday, Mrs. Foyd presiding over a good attendance. The motto for the month, “Careless Talk Costs Lives,” was given by Mrs. Crawford. Mrs. V. Stephens continued the Golden Thread talk, “Famous Composers— Charles de ’ la Marr.” A novelty game was won by Mrs. G. Meek. Competition winners for the month, “A Sugar Bag Article,” were: Mrs. J. Rae, 1; Mrs. J. Findlay, 2; Mrs. J. Robertson, 3, and Mrs. J. Kerr 4.
