Mr. and Mrs. A. Jost returned last evening from a holiday visit to the North Island. Mr. and Mrs. N. J’unge, of Rangiora, were visitors to Westport for the funeral of the latter’s sister, Mrs. Walker. Mrs. Adank received word yesterday that Ben and Fred Champion and Sid Lowe had been safely evacuated from Greece. Cables have been received reporting the successful evacuation from Greece of Quartermaster-Sergeant Frank Hill, son of Mrs. J. Fairbairn; Lieut. Sidney Wood, son of Mrs. J. H. Wood, Peel Street; Rifleman Walter McDonagh, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. McDonagh; and Bob Pryde. Education Board:

The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held on Monday, all members being present and the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre was in the chair. The Denniston Committee extended an invitation to the board and officers to the opening of the new school by the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Education, on June 21. The Board decided that the new school be occupied at the beginning of next term, May 26. The Ikamatua' Committee asked for the erection of a dental clinic and agreed to provide one-third up to a maximum of £lOO. Tenders were received from Mr. Judge and Mr. Taylor for the erection of a new school at Seddonville. The board decided to submit them to the Education Department for acceptance. The Public Works Department agreed to carry out work .at Westport North School site, removing trees and doing rough levelling when monetary authority was granted. The board is taking steps to hasten the granting of that authority. ‘ The chairman informed the Board of having interviewed the Minister of Education in Wellington recently on the legal hold-up now preventing the Board from gaining possession of the land from the Westport Borough Council for the Westport North site and stated the Minister had promised to introduce, when Parliament meets, the necessary legislation authorising the sale to the Education Board. The Board authorised the architect to erect new out offices at Inangahua Landing School in a position to serve the new school when erected there. The Board approved the holding of refresher courses for all teachers in Westport and Reefton districts, by the Superintendent of Physical Education. The dates have not yet been decided, but June 13 and 14 at Westport and Jbne 16 and 17 are suggested at Reefton. F. Lowe wrote offering to purchase outbuildings at Oparara School now unoccupied. The Board declined the offer but decided to ask the Department for authority to call tenders for disposal of Oparara school outbuildings and site. The resignation of Mrs. R. J. Watson, assistant teacher at Stockton, was accepted. The following appointments were recommended: Assistant mistress. Stockton: Mrs. A. Prosser (seven applicants). Sole teacher, Cape Foulwind: F. Musgrove, of Waimairi (11 applicants). Assistant mistress, Granity District High School: Miss O. Christie, of Cashmere (three applicants). The Board decided to readvertise Birchfield sole ; charge position. The Chairman reported for a meeting of the combined Denniston and Burnett’s Face school committees, and a representative of Denniston pupils to Denniston new school. Following that conference, the Chairman made recommendations to the Education Department and the Hon. P. C. Webb. The Education Board has now been advised by the Department that the Chairman’s recommendations have been approved and transport services from Burnett’s i? ace to Denniston will commence on Monday next, when Denniston new school will be open for pupils. The first round of the Three Arthur Cup match, scheduled for playing at the Kawatiri golf links on Sunday was cancelled on account of unsettled weather. Messrs E. Fair and A. Davies won the informal stroke match played over nine holes. While teeing on No. 1 hole,. Cr. H..G. Elley performed an amazing trickshot by sending his bah at right angles from the desired direction, where it finished up on the roof of the Club house. During a 1 social hour members took the opportunity to congratulate Cr. Elley on his election to the Borough Council. The toast to Cr. Elley was proposed by Mr. C. F. S’chaaick, Club Captain, in the absence of the President, Mr. A. A Wilson. Mr. Elley suitably replied. Ladies’ Golf: The following is the draw for the L.G.U. match to be payed on Wednesday:—Mrs. Nahr and Mrs. Fair; Mrs. Mullan and Mrs. Slee; Miss Robertson and Mrs. Wilson; Miss Slee and Mrs. Thorpy; Miss Brown and Mrs. Watson; MrsBailey and Mrs. Enright; Mrs. Bascand and Miss Marr; Miss Harden and Miss Lovell; Mrs. Schadick and Mrs. J. Woodward; Miss Parkinson and Mrs. Neill; Miss Woodward and scorer. The draw for the Rose Bowl qualifying round to bg played in conjunction with L.G.U. on Saturday, will be published on Thursday. The best score last week was Mrs. J. Woodward, 95/22/73.
