REEFTON NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent! REEFTON, February 10. Flying Officer F. J. Banham. who has been appointed by the Physical Welfare and Recreation Department to take charge of the Nelson District, was a visitor to Reefton during the week-end. Flying Officer Banham is to supervise and take charge of the physical training of tne Hom ( > Guards and to promote the physical welfare and recreation of the community as a whole. He ips made preliminary arrangements ‘or th e commencement of training oi the Home Guard in Reefton and wishes to contact all sports bodies in the near future with a view- to their taking an actiy.? part. The Inangahua Physical Fitness and Recreation Committee will hold a meeting within the next few days so that a Committee will be elected to assist in this necessary work. A public meeting of all sports bodies will be held towards the end < f February when Flying Officer Banham will gave an adai’ess on th? necessity of physical training bnt.li for the purposp of war activities and' the general welfare of the people. An appeal is made to all to give their earnest co-operation to the Government in this direction and instructors will probably bp. appointed in each town so that the scheme will
proceed smoothly. The ladies of the district will be catered for also and it is expected that a lady instructor will be appointed for the Nelson District. The arrival of the Greymouth and. Hokitika Bands yesterday in Reefton gave quite a gala spirit to the place. The bands were met at the bridge by the Inangahua Silver Band and escorted into Broadway. They then marched up Broadway, each of the three bands playing in turn. On reaching Bridge Street, they turned and marched ' back to the Band Room. The visitor., were entertained at dinner at Dawson’s. New Commercial and Southern Cross Hotels. • Mr and Mrs Herbert “Lawn, of Hokitika, were visitors, to Reefton during the week-end Th e weather on Saturday night and early on Sunday morning was •of the worst oossfme description. Heavy rain fefl, 'accompanied; tty wind of gale force. Some minor* damage was done by the wind, sheets of iron being taken off roofs and fences damaged, but nothing of a serious nature has been reported. The funeral of the late Mr John Mulligan took place yeslordnv afternoon. and was largely attended, the cortege being a very large on? indeed. The members of th,? Druldis’ Lodg (? also attended in fell numbers. Th e service at the Church of The Sacred Heart was conducted by Rev. Father O’Brien, who also read the prayers at the gravesid e tn the Suburban Cemetery.
