N.Z. FIRE FIGHTING

NEW ORGANISATION. WELLINGTON, February 8. The formation by the Government of a new fire-fighting organisation—the Auxiliary Fire Service—throughout New Zealand, on the same basis as the Territorial Force in all respects except control, was announced by the superintendent of the Wellington Fire Brigade (Mr. C. A. Wooler), to a parade of Emergency Precautions Scheme members. This branch will be entirely independent of the ordinary fir 6 service in Wellington. The personnel will number 450 officers and men, who will operate 25 powerful trailer pumping units. It is proposed to enlist suitable men who have been called up in the ballots and who for any reason are exempted from military service. Consideration is also being given to the enlistment of married men of categories not subject to the ballot.
