HOKITIKA, February 10.

Mr William Deakin, employed by Stuart and Chapman, sawmillers, of Ross, suffered injuries to his light hand when it was caught in a planing machine. He was attended by Di B. L Wilson of Hokitika. 'Rev. Father J. S. O’Brien, of the Cathedral staff, Christchurch, is at present officiating at . St. Mary s Church, Hokitika, during the absence of Rev. Dr. Harrison. There was again a flood in the Hokitika River yesterday, following rain over the week-end, which con tinued until last evening. The river appears to be again building up a deposit opposite the eastern part of the town. The rainfall last week was two | and a-quarter inches, while there was thirtv-seven hours of sunshine. Saturday’s rain stopped outdoor sports, including tennis and bowling matches. Tnere was, ■ however, a garden party at the Hospital, which was transferred to the Nurses’ Home, where in spite of the inclement weather, the function was carried through to a successful conclusion. The parade of the Home Guard at Hokitika yesterday morning was attended by 55 members. Owing to tne rain the men indulged in physical exercises in the Drill Hall. A bowling match at Runanga against Hokitika on Saturday was abandoned after a few heads had been played. It will be played on March 1. Recent visitors to the Hotel Westland include: Mr and Mrs A. E.
