Fire destroyed a six-valve console radio set, the property of Mr E. J. Rundle, at his residence, Shakespeare Street,' Greymouth, at about 11.15 o’clock yesterday morning. No one was in the house at the time, andi when the outbreak was discovered by a neighbour, Mrs R. McQuinn, the radio was blazing. The Greymouth Fire Brigade was summoned, and in the meantime, Mrs McQuinn, despite the smoke, threw buckets of water on the kitchen wall, which had been set alight from the radio. On the arrival of the Fire Brigade, the tire on the wall and window frame was extinguished by bucket pump and the remains of the charred radio were carried outside. As the radio had not been switched on yesterday morning, the fire had apparently originated in the set itself, reducing the chassis and most of the cabinet to a twisted mass. The damage to the kitchen was small and the building and its contents are covered by insurance.
