Racing Notes

Ajax to be Sold: The ra'cehorse, Ajax, will be offered for sale next month during the Newmarket and Australian Cup week. It is anticipated that American breeders will bid for Ajax. A Veteran: F. Musgrave, trainer of Ajax and many other good horses in his time, celebrated his eighty-first birthday on January 13. He has no intention ol retiring" from his profession, and still rises every day at 4 a.m. and rides his pony to Caulfield to supervise the track work of his team. Musgrave can no doubt claim to be the oldest active trainer in the world.

Gold Flight: As a two-year-old when racing last season, Gold Flight started eight times and put up a good record by winning three times, being three times second and once third. This season she has started eight times without winning. The nearest she has been was a third at Riccarton to Rakahanga 7.10 and Boswell 3.9 with 7.7. In her last start Gold Flight 7.21 was second to Lord Nv.ii/ld 9.0, a length and a-half away, in Imin. 13sec. Military Maid:

Messrs G. Lang and G. B. Walden, Wellington, have-sent Military Maid to Christchurch to be trained by C. G. Humphries, who also prepares Schoolgirl. Military Maid is a four-year-old brown mare by Captain Bunsby from After Glow II and was bought at the foot of her dam by Messrs Lang and Walden at the Westmere dispersal sale in 1937. They had bad luck to lose the dajn shortly afterward when carrying a' colt to Beau Pere. Military Maid has won only three races, but at times has shown encouraging form and has not had the best of luck during her career. Serenata:

Serenata’s autumn racing will be done in New Zealand, but T. R. George hopes to be able to secure shipping space for Beau Vite this month, and, if he is successful, the Auckland Cup winner will contest weight-for-age events at the Sydney Easter meeting. The weight-for-age races at this meeting are the Autumn Plate, one mile and a-half; the AllAged Plate, one mile; the Cumberland Plate, one mile and three-quart-ers; and the A.J.C. Plate, two miles and a-quarter. Kyleboa:

Kyleboa, the dam of Mona's Song, has produced a colt to Nigger Minstrel and has been bred to Man’s Pal. Kyleboa, who was foaled in 1919, has been a shy breeder. She was got by Balboa—Lady Kyle, by Charlemagne ll—Strathpeffer, by Birkenhead—ldeal, by Dreadnought—Mourn Ida, by Apremont—ldplia. Kyleboa has a good pedigree, and on the score of breeding should produce something of more note than what has been the case. The Nigger Minstrel colt, may enhance her reputation as a producer.

Trotting Notes

A Proposal. , , , In order to stimulate unhoppleo trotting in Victoria, an has suggested that a fund of should be raised by subscription o be given for the first 2.10 mile by a trotter, the purse to be divided evenly between the owner and thedrner. A proviso should be added tha • record must be made at an even gait.

R T m h e e d TrotUng Association should be asked to clarify its rules beto e tl e Timaru Nursery Stakes. Last . < this event was run in divisions, with the result that the rules were amended to provide that no ‘classic” can be divided. Another amendment fixes safety numbers for all courses, and ] ; . V s‘it down that not more than three horses in excess of the safety number shall be allowed to start from any one mark. 1 he safety number at the special mile barrier at Washdyke is 13, so that the maximum number allowed by the rules >" 16, At the moment> (says the lim-

aru Herald) there appeals to be more than a possibility that the final acceptors will be in excess of the limit. In that case, it will not be possible to comply with both rules, ana the club should not be placed in a dilemma. Star Attractions. Immediately it became known that the Timaru Trotting Club had rejected a proposal to arrange another meeting between Certissimus and the three-year-old pacers of other clubs became interested. Already the connections of Certissimus and Special Force have been invited to participate in a special race on a yards-for-age basis, which it is proposed to hold at Addington for a stake of £6OO.
