WAR ITEMS

LONDON, 'February 4. “Much greater personal effort and sacrifice will be required from all classes in Britain before victory can be won,” declared the Under-Secret-ary for the Air, Mr Balfour, in a speech. “Some people were drawing more money than in peace-time. A section of the people has scarcely felt the war. These people will have to give up more, and the rich will have to do with much less.” Supplementary estimates for six hundred million sterling, for expenditure arising out of the war, were issued this afternoon, in the form of a White Paper. A further vote of credit for one thousand million pounds towards defraying the expenses, which may be incurred in connection with the war, for the year ending March 31, 1942, was also issued, and will be discussed at an early sitting of the Commons. The City of Rio de Janeiro has made a further grant of £5,000 to the British Red Cross, bringing the city’s total contributions to £35,800. BERGEN, February 4. Germans sentenced to death three Norwegians for wirelessing information, aiding British bombers. Another was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and two were acquitted.
