BURNHAM CAMP

IMPROVED FACILITIES. Provision is being made for impiovod fire-fighting facilities at the Burnham Camp as part of a change-over to a wholly artesian water supply for all camp needs. The district engineer to the Public Works Department (Mr. T. G. Beck) said that provision was being made for four fire-fighting streams of 100 gallons a minute each with an improved pressure of about 50 lb. a square inch at the nozzle. Trailer pumps were being obtained to replace the present fixed booster pump, giving a more flexible and effective service. Adequate fire-fighting provision, which was necessary for any big camp, had already been made at the Wigram and Harewood stations of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. T'enders have been called for a large new swimming bath for the soldiers at the Burnham Military Camp. According to the plans, the new bath will be built of reinforced concrete and will be 100 feet in length and 66 feet wide. The depth at the shallow end will be 4ft. 6in., and at the other end 7ft. The deepest part 33ft. from this end will be end Bft. The proposed site is near the main entrance to the camp. The bath will be adequate for the needs of the camp, and will be welcomed by the soldiers, as the present small swimming bath is regarded as both inadequate and obsolete. Artesian water will be the means of supply. The larger amount of water able to be stored will also, it is stated, be useful for fire fighting should an emergency arise, though the bath store is not officially part of the fire-fighting service planned for the camp.
