GREYMOUTH PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE

At a meeting of the Greymouth Patriotic Committee in the Municipal Chambers there were present: The Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchingham), chairman, Messrs P. J. McLean, F. W. Baillie, T. E. Coates, O. McLean, T. P. Ryan, J. W. Grecnslade, J. B. Kent, W. H. Parfitt (hon? secretary), Very Rev. Father Long and Rev. A. A. Bensley. A number of apologies for absence were received. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones), stating that the claims of Westland for a visit from the Air Force Band would not be overlooked when that combination again visits the South Island.

Mr O’Brien is to be thanked for writing to the Minister. The secretary of the National Patriotic Fund '(Mr G. A. Hayden), advised that Mr R. A. Smith, of Waipawa, has donated a thoroughbred yearling, War Effort, to be disposed of for the benefit of the patriotic funds, and that tickets are to be sold at all race meetings, the proceeds to be distributed pro rat a among the various Patriotic Committees. The secretary stated that arrangements had been made in Westland. In connection with the proposed effort to raise additional funds, it was suggested that a Queen Carnival be conducted, with candidates representing the Navy, Army and Air Force, to commence about Easter. It was decided that the Raffle Committee should submit a report on me proposal. The chairman reported on the recent entertainment provided for West Coast troops at the Welcome Club, Christchurch, and stated that credit was due to all who assisted, also to the Union Jack Club.

The joint committee controlling the West Coast A. and P. Show advised that a Miss Westland . beauty competition is to be a feature of the Show' on February 15. The co-operation of the committee was approved. With reference to the proposal that a tax be collected for patriotic funds, it was left to the committee’s delegates to the Patriotic Council, to exercise their discretion when the matter is discussed.

A letter from Mr Richardson conveyed thanks to the committee for Chrsitmas gifts to the guard on the explosives magazine at Greymouth.
