FIVE RINKS LEFT IN

BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP Spearman’s Singles Win | per ‘Press Association] . CHRISTCHURCH, January 19. At the Bowls Championships yesterday, the Fours advanced a further stage’ and there are now live teams left in. They are: Munn (Canterbury) with two lives; and Besley (New Brighton), Mitchell (Blenheim), Maslin (Hawera), and Ure (North End, Invercargill), each with one life. Under the automatic draw, Munn gets a bye to-morrow morning and, although much will depend on how h e gets on in his first game in the afternoon as to when the final will be played, it is not thought that it will be possible to reach it until Tuesday. A further stage in the Pairs will be played at 9 a.m. to-morrow morning at St. Alban’s, when Hadwin (Hutt) meets Joseph (Canterbury). The remaining games in this section will be played as some of the men become available from the Fours, but it is thought that the final will not be reached until Wednesday. Bremner’s rink (Auckland), was put out by Mitchell after a hard fought game, the last end being the deciding factor. Deare, who plays third for Bremner, drew what appeared to be the winning shot, but Mitchell’s .third snicked it out. Mitchell put in protecting bowls, and Bremner drove twice, but missed. Besley wanted three to tie in the last end against Munn, but failed to ,get there. His bowling has been one of the highlights of the tournament, the success of this team from a small suburban club has been followed with interest, more especially as they get little practice. They still have one life left, and, after a much-needed rest over the week end, may prove hard to beat in, to-morrow’s play. Maslin’s team is playing excellent bowls as is Ure’s Four, so that Monday should be a day of thrills for the crowd. Saturday's results were:—
