WHITHER MANKIND
The glory of peace has own away Like a migrant bird to other spheres, And shadows of death grotesque and grey Lethargically move in a world of tears —• For übiquitous war is on land and main. Forgotten are ail our hopes and dreams, Forgotten the Martyr who was crucified; We panded to power and avaracious schemes, And each passing day our sins are multiplied So that Jesus from the Cross sighs again. No man can visualise the years before him; No mother can delight in her growing son; Each and all is encompassed in a dim, Vast chaos, aggravated by bomb and gun Thundering o’er the charnel terrta’in. Fools cry to God on their bended knees To succour them in their protracted woe; But the Almighty neither hears nor sees The multitudinous sinners fighting below On their wide and bountiful domain. No sanctimonious plea will avail mankind From the folly of his perverted pursuits Whilst to lethal weapons he is inclined, And ever shall he partake of better fruits And endure their purgatorial pain.
