TAX ON OVERTIME
AUSTRALIAN OBJECTION. DISCUSSED BY PREMIER. (Received January 16, 1.31 a.m.) SYDNEY. January 15. Mr. R. G. Menzies, Prime Minister, told a deputation of trade union leaders to-day that the Federal Government would not exempt the overtime earnings of the trade unionists from taxation. He said that he was being asked to scrap the one criterion oC capacity to pay, and to assess incomes lor taxation on a new principle based on the time it had taken to earn them. This was impracticable. Overtime also was unavoidable in the present circumstances of war urgency, but he hoped to see it reduced to a minimum soon. He admitted that there was a good deal of intelligible misunderstanding on the income tax. He appealed to the unions to be patient.
