MUNICIPAL BAND

[To the Editor.] Sir, —With the approach of another Christmas Season, may we be granted space in your valuable paper to forward a direct appeal to the public of Greymouth. We realise, of course, that in this troublesome period, our appeal will not have the direct result as in former years. However, we intend making a serious endeavour during the next few weeks to liquidate a portion of the debt outstanding on our set of new instruments. Might we state here that out of a total debt of £970, three years ago,, only £282 remains to be cleared —certainly an .effort to be proud of. During Christmas Eve we intend playing a selection of Carols in the vicinity of the shopping centre and afterwards visiting the residential areas in the early morning. As our source of revenue is naturally of a very limited nature, we are confident the public will give freely to the collectors on this occasion. Now, Mr Editor, we feel sure you will pardon us when we claim as a Band to have a definite standing in the community. And also that Bands owing to their purely voluntary status are without a doubt a hobby unexcelled for the youth of to-day, and certainly conductive of good citizenship. The Band recently was fortunate in securing the good offices of Mr F. Boustridge as President, and wish to thank him publicly for the donation of a magnificent Xmas hamper, which is at present being raffled for Band funds. Under his guidance we hope to fulfill our duty to the town during the coming year. In conclusion, may we say that help received will be returned in the form of usefol service to the public as a whole. May we take the opportunity of wishing each and everyone a Happy Xmas and a Bright and Prosperous New Year. On behalf of thd Greymouth Municipal Band, — ■T. A. ANDERSON, Conductor. T. FREEMAN, Secretary. Wm. GARTH, Treasurer.
