POLITICAL CRISIS

Federal Budget COMPROMISE LIKELY. [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received December 5, 2.48 a.m.) CANBERRA, December 4. Political tension is at its highest peak here. Speculation is rife concerning the Menzies Government’s fate. Politicians were smarting under newspaper criticism when the Budget debate was continued in the House of Representatives this afternoon. They carried on for a short time. Then the House unexpectedly adjourned for the night so as to allow the various parties to hold meetings to-night, and find a basis for a compromise on the taxation proposals. The debate will be resumed to-mor-row. Eleventh-hour proposals on the Budget for a compromise were made by the Federal Ministry and were submitted at a meeting earlier today of the War Advisory Council. Strict secrecy on these has been observed by the leaders of the parties.
