’ Racing Notes Southland Candidate: Dark Flight and Gold Flight are being got ready for the spring meetings, and both are working well for their bwner-trainer, Mr D. H. Tweedie. Last season Dark Flight won £9OO and Gold Flight £685, and both look sure to have another good season. Sparkle did not have a hard race in the Tally Ho Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday, and was improved by the outing. The Dunedin Cup winner is being given a special preparation for the New Zealand CUp, and she will probably make her next appearance at the Dunedin spring meeting. At Wellington: Last season the Wellington Racing Club gave £44,100 in stakes and paid £44,507 in taxes. Smoke Screen: A win over hurdles seemed to be a sure thing for Smoke Screen if he stood up to experience. He won the

Great Northern Champagne Stakes, Great Northern Guineas, Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, and ranks a class much above the ordinary hurdler. All Veil: At Moonee Valley on August 21 Messrs G. J. Barton and W. Balloch’s All Veil won a division of the Bournefield Park Handicap. He started favourite in a field of 13, and, with 8.7, won in Imin 13Jsec. All Veil has proved himself a brilliant galloper, and is expected to win a good race oi two during the season. The Buzzer: The Buzzer is in work again. He won the Auckland Cup of 1937 when racing as a four-year-old. In the following season he was second to Arctic King in the New Zealand Cup, and third in the Metropolitan Handicap to Padishah and Sovereign Lady. Last season The Buzzer was unplaced in four starts. Apparently The Buzzer is not too sound, as he has done very little racing during the past two or three seasons. It is, however, announced that he will be trained for the New Zealand’ Cup, for which the necessary preparation requires a sound horse.Belle Cane: There was apparently no secret attached to Belle Cane’s ability to gallop prior to her win at Awapuni, where she cleared out from the rest of the field. She was unplaced in two starts last season, and is a three-year-old by Bean Pere from Duck’s Egg, by Absurd from Tame , Duck, the dam of Admiral Drake and Francis Drake. A rcas: The Hunting Song colt Areas who won the Marangai Handicap, is' owned by Mr W. A. lorns, a steward of j the Wellington Racing Club. Last sea'son Areas dead-heated in the Trial ' Plate with Charles Edward at the ' Trentham autumn meeting, and won ’ the Autumn Plate, of £425, at Ric- . carton. Callisto, the dam of Areas, 1 was got by - General Laytour—Pro- 1 dice, by Catmint—Hyades, by Hymet- ’ tus—Straga', by Birkenhead. Pro- , dice is also the dam of Gallio : (brother to Callisto) and T'e Hero. 1
