Mr E. G. Ashby returned yesterday from Christchurch. Mr S. Martyn arrived yesterday from Invercargill. Mr T. D. Holmes returned yesterday from Christchurch. Mrs J. W. Sangster arrived by yesterday’s express from Christchurch. Miss A. Anderson was a passenger by yesterday’s express from Christchurch. . Miss E. Ramsay was a passenger by yesterday’s express from Christchurch. President Jose Felix Estigarriba and his wife were killed in an aeroplane accident, states a cablegram from Ascuncion (Paraguay). Pilot Officer Alexander Herbert Gould, believed to be a New Zealander, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Passengers by yesterday’s express to Christchurch included Miss J. Jepson, Mr H. Foote, Mr H. Larsen (to Wellington), Mr J. Hassall (to Oamaru), Mr and Mrs E. Marchant, Mr C. Young (to Christchurch).

Rev. P. Gladstone Hughes, of St. Andrew’s Church, Auckland, and for some years minister of Chalmers Church, Timaru, has received a unanimous call to St. John’s Church, Wellington.

The funeral of Mrs Alice Ann Nicholson, of Dunollie, took place yesterday afternoon at the Karoro Cemetery. Rev. W. Osborne Brown conducted the services at the residence of Mrs T. Nicholson, Dunollie, and at the graveside.

Captain A. R. Curtis, M.C., SubArea Officer for the Greymouth Military District, who has been a patient at the Grey Hospital, was discharged on Saturday. He leaves today for Christchurch, where at St. James’ Church, Riccarton, on Saturday his marriage to Miss Norma Wilson, of Riccarton, will take place.

Mr C. J. Furness, who will leave at an early date to enter military camp at Papakura, was on Saturday farewelled by the staff’ of Duncan McLean Ltd. Mr P. J. McLean, on behalf of the presented Mr Furness with a money belt, and on behalf of the firm handed him a cheque. He expressed his appreciation of Mr Furness’s services to the firm and wished him the best of luck and a safe and early return, when, added Mr McLean, his position would be available for him again. Other speakers were Messrs L. D. McGlashan, W. Gunn, A. Hughes, T. Patterson, and H. Anderson. Mr James Drummond, F.L.S., F.Z.S., one of New Zealand’s fameu naturalists, and a journalist for 50 years, died in the Christchurch Hospital on Friday night at the age of 70. He was known all over’ the world for his authoritative works on tne birds, animals, and flora of this country. Until 10 years ago he was in the service of New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd. Mr Drummond took up the study of nature as a hobby in his youth, but he was a journalist as well and during his long service with the “Times” and the “Star” in Christchurch he made many friends. Mr Drummond was responsible for national histories and some entirely different works. “The Life and Work of R. J. Seddon” (1906) is a large volume, not just a biography of the great Premier, but a text-book on the history of New Zealand Liberalism. He was also the biographer of Samuel Marsden and he edited “John Rutherford, the White Chief.” Five years ago he planned to write a history of his own Scottish clan.

The funeral of Mr Charles Bateman, of Dunollie, took place yesterday afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. The Rev. F. H. Robertson conducted the services at the residence and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs R. Bowman, J. Foster, R. Hacker, and S. Burgess.
