ANTI-CONSCRIPTIONIST

Montreal Mayor OPPOSITION TO REGISTER (Received August 4, 7.30 p.m.) OTTAWA, August 3. Mr Mackenzie King, Prime Minister, announced in the House of Commons that the Government would make a statement of policy later, arising from the refusal of the Mayor of Montreal, Mr Houde, to comply with the forthcoming National Registration. Mr Houde has urged the population to follow his example, and not to register. Mr Mackenzie King’s statement was made after the Opposition leader, Mr Hanson, drew attention to Mayor Houde’s speech, in which he declared himself against a national registration, which he describes as a form of conscription, which the Government, he said, had given a pledge it would not introduce.

Mr Houde’s speech was printed in an early edition of a Montreal newspaper. Later the speech was withdrawn from the paper at the request of the censor.
