BOROUGH FINANCES

MAYOR’S EXPECTATION. STOPPAGE OF DRIFT. Referring on Saturday to comments on th e Borough finances in the Grey River Argus, His .Worship the Mayor, Mr F. A. Kitchingham, stated: “The leading article in today’s Argus on Borough Finances proceeds on the entirely wrong premise that tho present Council’s finances have slipped £8000; this is not co; it was the previous Council whose finances slipped £B2OO in three years, an average of over £2700 a year. .This drift was reduced by the presen Council to £7OO-£BOO in 1938-9 and probably when the final figures are obtained for 1939-40 the drift will be found to have virtually stopped

“When we got to Hamilton,” writes “New Chum” in a Manchester weekly, describing a motor trip from Auckland to Rotorua, “I asked my host to stoo at a tobacconist’s, so that I could replenish my pouch. The tobacconist recommended the New Zealand tobacco so, highly that (somewhat doubtfully I confess) I invested in a small tin of Cut Plug No. 10 - and found it so good that I told my friend I was sorry I hadn’t got more of it v'l-ilc I was about it. He laughed. “Oh, that’s alright,” he said, “you can buy New Zealand tobacco anywhere and everywhere. It has a Dominion-wide sale.” “And so I discovered. Every New Zealander seems to know “toasted” and most of them smoke it.” There are only live brands of these popular tobaccos — Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold. Not J'mly are they renowned! for their fascinating bouquet and beautiful flavour tut toasting (by the manufacturers’ own process) largely frees them from nicotine. That’s why the’re so comparatively harmless.—Advr.
