Roadside Fatality

WHANGAREI, August 2.

Alfred Lyddiard, aged 21, single, of Titoki, was killed at Maungatapere this afternoon when he and a companion were mending the tyre of a car in which he had been given a lift when returning home from Whangarei. He was struck by a passing motorist, Albert Julius Peterson, a farmer, of Whatitiri, and so badly injured including a fracture of the skull, that he died instantly. His companion who was the owner of the cay, was also injured and taken to hospital, suffering from concussion.

Deceased had enlisted and was about to enter camp. He was a prominent cyclist and hockey player.
