In June the' Greymouth Municipal Gasworks had a record monthly output of 4,854,000 cubic feet, stated the Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchinghami at last evening’s meeting of the Borough Council. The July figure ex r ceeded that of June, but did not cmite reach the five million mark.

At last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council Cr. R. J. Williams was appointed to represent the Borough on the Waste Materials Board to be set up in the Grey district in connection with the Government waste materials saving campaign. The Mayor and Cr. H. Herring declined nomination.

Westport’s enforced “black out” owing to shortage of electric current, seems likely to continue indefinitely. The weather report indicated rain for the district yesterday, but only a light drizzle fell and the morning broke beautifully clear again. It heavy rain is not experienced in the immediate future, further power restrictions are likely to be effected, to the discomfort of the community.

The approaching exhaustion of the Dominion’s white pine forests has le d to a demonstration that this timber can be dispensed with in the butter export trade. Writing to the Greymouth Borough Council last evening, the Principal, Greymouth Technical School, advised that the appointments of Messrs A. H. McKane and J. B. Kent as representatives of local bodies on the Technical School Board of Managers would expire in August, and asked that nominations be forwarded not later than August 16. On the motion of Crs. G. R. Harker and J. Saunders, Messrs McKane and- Kent were nominated for re-appointment.

At a sitting of the Warden’s Court at Greymouth yesterday, the Warden recommended for the consent of the Minister of Mines an application by the Taramakau Gold Dredging Ltd., for a special dredging claim, 52 years, 900 acres, Blocks 8 and 10, Waimea S.D., Block 9 Hohonu S.D. Mr J. W. Hannan represented applicants. An application by the same company for the surrender of a special dredging claim No. 36/37, was adjourned until ’August 13.

At the meeting of the Grey County Council last evening, letters were received from several farmers inquiring for particulars of the Rural Housing scheme. Cr. Mulcare remarked: “I do not think the Council should be responsible for rural build-, ings, which would deteriorate in, value later.” The chairman moved that the Council advise the farmers that the Council did not propose to go on with the idea. The National Security Tax will -be payable on all wages earned since July 22, stated the Registrar of Social Security, Mr G. G. Mitchell, last evening. It is also payable on allowances, such as board and lodging provided by an employer for an employee. On income, other than salary or wages, about which many inquiries have been made, Mr Mitchell pointed out that the same amount as is due to be paid during August for the Social Security charge has to be paid during the present month.

•At the Greymouth Magistrate’s Court yesterday, appearing on remand from Christchurch, before Mr J M. Bunt, J.P., James Harold Stapleton, 22, baker, of Christchurch, was charged with breaking, entering and theft at the warehouse of the Grey Electric Power Board on November 7, 1939, and with a similar offence in respect to the warehouse of Q-Tol Ltd., Wellington, on August 26, 1939. Accused was further remanded to appear at Greymoutn on Monday next, on the application of Detective C. Davis, no application being made for bail.

Charles O’Keefe, of Eldon Lane, Greymouth, and Eugene Lafferty, a ship’s fireman, from a vessel in port, were admitted to the Grey Hospital last evening, suffering from slight lacerations at the backs of their heads, and bruises. Their injuries were sustained at the junction of Puketahi and Tainui Street, a car driven by F. L. Balderstone. t Blackball, ran into them. At the time of the accident, about 7.30 p.m., visibility was very difficult. Ne'ther of. the men were seriously hurt, and their condition last night was reported to be satisfactory.

Stating that he did not bring up the matter with an idea of pok’ng into the affairs of other local bodies, the Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchingham) at last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council, said that he had been told that the Grey Hospital Board had been unsuccessful in abating the smoke nuisance at the hospiial. Cr. A. H. McKane said that ii'“ board had installed an automatic stoker with effective results, and if the model, which was being experimented with, proved successful, it was proposed to instal a second stoker. It was decided to express appreciation of the steps being taken by, the Hospital Board.

A month ago the Greymouth Borough Council, as an economy measure, decided to dispense with the sending of minutes of, meetings to councillors, and last evening the minutes of the meetings held during th? month took 15 minutes to read. Some councillors suggested that the reading was unnecessary, but the Mayor <.Mr F. A. Kitchingham) pointed out tnat the Standing Orders provided that they had to be read. In any case, he added, the reading would prevent mistakes being left unrecorded. It so happened that one councillor claimed that a motion he had moved at one meeting had been omitted and the Mayor altered the minutes accordingly.

Replying to Cr. H. Herring at last evening’s meeting of the Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchingham) stated that in an interview with Hon. H. T. Armstrong, he (the Mayor) had expressed the view that the police station should be shifted to a more central and suitable site, and that the Government should get a footing on some block where it could in the future erect Government bui'dings to house all of the Departments which were scattered over Greymouth. He had put it to the l\f.mister that he had no wish to embarrass the Government, but that it was to the benefit of town planning for such a course to be adopted. He had also mentioned that the police station site was marooned in times of flood.
