COMPULSORY SERVICE Desired by Roosevelt I Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received July 31, 8.40 p.m./ WASHINGTON, July 31. President Roosevelt reiterated his belief in compulsory universal service as the Senate Military Committee unanimously approved of his request fcr authority to (mobilise the Nation< 1 Guard reserve for a year of intensive training. Mr Roosevelt said that the situation to-day was not analagous to that in 1917, when the United States sent troops abroad who were trained.
“Then,” he said, “there was secu’ky for this country. Now it depends on having trained seasoned soldiers in adequate numbers when needed.”
