LARGE LINEN FLAX GRANT National Service Vote [Per Press Association] PARLIAMENT BLDGS.. July 31. The Supplementary Estimates, providing for an expenditure or £1,388,312, in addition to the Main Estimates, already approved, tf.ve/e introduced in the House to-da?/. Among the chief extra votes sougnr are: General administration, £21,009; development of primary and secondary industries, £15,927; Broadcasting Account, £11,562. For railway construction there is £200,000, and for railway improvements and additions to open lines, £82,050; while for public buildings, there is £22,525; and for roads, £70,000. For irrigation, water supply and drainage £192,500 is included. Linen flax development accounts for a vote of £430,000. An additional grant of £250,000 for the Main Highways Account is. also provided for. A subsidy of £BOO is provided for the Chatham Islands shipping service.

A new vote in the Supplementary Estimates is that of £101,440 for the recently established National Service Department, and the Director of National Service is to receive a salary of £lO5O. Another interesting item is a sum of £l4OO provided for women police. Expenditure in connection witn the salvage operations of the steamer "Port Bowen” and the disposal oi the materials is expected to absorb £lO 000.

Th e carriage of mails by transpacific air service is expected to cost £5OOO.
