GREY BOWLING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. Mr. F. H. Denton (President) was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Greymouth Bowling Club held last night, with an attendance of approximately thirty members. The chairman welcomed Mr. T. Jones, who, he said, had been present at the meetings for 34 years. The annual report, as published, was received and adopted. Mr. F. D. Whibley, on behalf of the Centre delegates, thanked his colleagues and paid a tribute to the President of the Centre, Mr. T. Bowes, stating that he thought it advisable that his (the President’s) term be extended to two years. He reported that the annual tournament wa s very successful, and showed a profit of £4O. Last year’s membership in all the clubs was 325, and it had been a most satisfactory season.

Mr. Whibley’s suggestion that Mr Rowes take his (Mr. Whibley’s) place as delegate was not acted upon. Mr. Whibley moved that it o;recommended that the constitution of the New Zealand Bowling Association be altered, so that the various centres have representation oi» the Association.

Mr. Whibley’s reporr was received, and the chairman thanked the delegates for their services. The Runanga Bowling Club wrote submitting its proposal that only champions of the clubs compete in the champion of champions tournament.

Mr. Tate moved that the Greymouth Club instruct their delegates to support that motion. Mr. Cromwell seconded, and the motion was carried.

The chairman said that the question of continuing pennant matches was to be discussed. Mr. Kilgour thought that these matches should be dropped. The chairman said that the petrol restrictions would automatically stop the matchesMr. Crankshaw said that there was not enough club play last year. Mr. C. Strongman said that he would not like to see a rule made on the matter at this stage. Mr. E. Moss stated that he did no” think the Karoro Club was going to carry on with pennant competitions. Mr. M. Phillips’ motion that the competition be suspended in tiur meantime was carried. 1 The following trophies wer e presented to their winners by the chairman:—Championship Shield, Mr. L. Mercer; Championship Pairs, Messrs L. Mercer and J. S. Robertson; Rink Cup, Messrs A. Hughes, J. S. Rooertson, L. Mercer and S. Smith; Lyttelton Cup, Messrs E. Moss and b. Coffey; Tate Cup, Messrs Hood anti King. The chairman stated that there was no trophy for the Junior Singles, which were won by Mr. J. Shannon, and the Junior Championship Pairs and the handicap matches were not completed. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. F. H. Denton; Vice-President, Mr. A. E. Kilgour; Treasurer, Mr. F. Congreve, Auditor, Mr. J. R. Leitch; Centre Delegates, Messrs F. D. Whibley, C. J. Strongman and J. S. Robertson,Committee, Messrs F. Congreve, A. Hughes, L. Mercer, J. S. Robertson, T. Crankshaw and G. Pattinson; Selection Committee, ..Messrs E. Mos?, F. D. Whibley, and L. Mercer. Mr. A. Hughes said he had decidea to relinquish the position of secretary, and he moved that Mr. A. E. Tabb, who was now on a tour of the Islands, be appointed to the position.

The chairman seconded the rnotlou. which was carried. Mr. J. Shannon recommended that a time limit be imposed on jtffi’or matches.

Mr. J. S. Robertson moved that the Junior Competitions be abandoned. Mr. Mercer seconded the motion, which was carried.

Mr. Kilgour said that the must be encouraged.

Mr. J. Shannon moved an amendment that the junior competitions be retained.

Mr. Shannon’s amendment was carried by 17 votes to 11. Mr. Mercer proposed that the Junior Competition be closed if insufficient entries (under 16 players) were recorded. The recommendation was carried.

Mr. Browne’s proposal that the junior competition be on a knock-out basis was not carried.

The chairman requested members to pay their subscriptions before November.

It was decided to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. A. S. L. Armstrong on their diamond jubilee. Mr. R, Smith reported that a. set of bowls left by the late Mr. W. L. Gittos had been presented to the club by Mr. Gittos’ relations. The secretary stated that the bowls left to the Club by the late Mr. Ring were to be disposed of, the proceeds to go to the Patriotic or Red Cross Fund. It was decided to thank Mrs. Ring for the donation of the bowls. A motion of thanks was accorded to the retiring secretary, Mr. A. Hughes, and it was decided to award him an honorium of £5/5/- for his services last year.

A motion of congratulation was accorded the successful Greymouth rink which competed at Nelson last season.

Mr. A. Gunn suggested that, as a. patriotic gesture, a small sum be donated io patriotic funds on the opening day, It was decided to act on the suggestion.
