PATRIOTIC FUNDS

CANTERBURY A.A. GIFT. (Per Press Association], CHRISTCHURCH, March 21. The council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) decided last night to allocate £250 for patriotic purposes this year, £5O of it to be for the present appeal being made •by the Salvation Army r*nd Young Men’s Christian Association. The association will also offer the interest-free loan of £l,OOO for the duration of the war and one year after it.

Mr. L. D. Pickles, the patrol officer, reported that signposts on the Summit road had been pulled out by vandals, and two had even been thrown down cliffs. It was decided to offer a reward for information leading to a conviction. On the motion of Mr. C. J. Halsey, it was decided to suggest to the chief city traffic inspector (Mr. J. Bruerton) that a pedestrian cressing at the intersection of Colombo and Gloucester Streets, which Mr. Halsey said was very busy on Friday nights, should be moved along the street from the intersection. Mr. A. N. Campbell, of Omihi, consigned two fat ewes to the Addington market yesterday for disposal in aid of the patriotic funds. An ’all-New Zealand matinee is to be presented at Flis Majesty’s Theatre, in the Haymarket, on March 15, to raise funds for comforts for the New Zealand troops. It will be under the patronage of the Duchess of Kent. The cartoonist, David Low, will make his first appearance on the stage. The artists will include Rosina Buckman, Esther Fisher, John Amadio, and Keith Wilbur. Shayle Gardner is arranging the programme and Sir Hugh Walpole, Hector Bolitho, and Dr. Merton Flodge are contributing sketches. The conductor of the Sadlers—Wells Orchestra, Warwick Braithwaite, is arranging for the orchestra to play the works of New Zealand composers. [Fer Press Association!. FEILDING, March 19. The JHeilding district has had marked success in the patriotic appeal collection undertaken by the local Patriotic Committee with the co-operation of the Chamber of Commerce and leading farmers. The sum of £l,OOO was aimed at as an objective, and the total amount collected exceeded £2,000. FURTHER GIFTS. DUNEDIN. March 19. The directors of Ross and G'endining, Ltd., have vc£ed £lOOO to provincial patriotic funds, divid’d £etwen their four main branches, Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland. Half of the amount available for each district is earmarked for the benefit of returning soldiers or their dependents, the balance to be expended at the discretion of the provincial committee. The allocation is as follows:—Otago and Southland £l5O, Canterbury and Westland £l5O, Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Marlborough, and Nelson £4OO, Auckland and East Coast £3OO.

MR LEFEAUX’S SALARY,

WELLINGTON. March 18. The Minister for Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) announced to-day that the Government had agreed that the salary of the Governor of the Reserve Bank during the current year be paid over to the National Patriotic Fund for use in the provision of benefits for the British and Allied forces overseas. It will be recalled,” said the Minister, “that it was announced on December 14 last that the Governor of the Reserve Bank (Mr L. Lefeaux) had intimated to the Government that the last year of his term of office should be regarded as a voluntary contribution to the national war effort, and that his service for that period should be without salary if hostilities continued until' the end of 1940.”
