Easter Conference at greymouth. To-morrow by the express due from Christchurch at 3.10 p.m., between and 70 representatives of Catmnu Clubs from all parts of Canterbury and Otago, will arrive to take part in the Easter Canference and Competitions of the South Island Federated Catholic Clubs, which opens at the St Columba Hall on Easter Saturday morning. The teams are from Invercargill, Dunedin, Oamaru, Ash burton and three from Christchurch. St. Mary’s Club, Hokitika, will also compete. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. H. Herring) will accord the visitors a civic reception at the St. Columba Hall at 10 a.m., on Saturday, when an official welcome to the parish will also be extended by Very Rev. Father J. Long. After the welcome a grouo photograph will be taken. The subject for the debate, which will be judged by Mr L. B. Galbraith is “That Commerce is of Greater Importance Than Culture." Ten teams including two from St. Columba Club will compete, the first debate taking place at 11.30 a.m., between St. Mary’s (Christchurch) and St. Mary’s (Hokitika). Two debates will take place in the afternoon, at 32 O.and 3.30 o’clock, and two- in the evening, that at 8 p.m., St. Columba Club and St. Bede’s Old Boys’ Association, Christchurch, being broadcast by 3ZR.

The St. Columba team is as follows: —Debate, Messrs W. J. Butler and L. B. Phillips; Elocution, Mr J. C. Gilbert; Oration, Mr P. Blanchfield Junr.; Religious Questions, Mr T. O’Farrell; Impromptu Speech, Mr I. Mcllroy; Billiards, Mr A., Twohill; Tennis, Mr. L. B. Phillips; Delegates, Messrs M. G. Kelly and C. R. McGinley (substitute). The second debating team will be Messrs J. P. Gilbert and I. Mcllroy. On Saturday the tennis competition will open at the St. Columba Courts, and in the evening the billiards competition will be held in: the Club’s billiard room. A general Communion of visiting competitors and delegates w.th members of the St. Columba Club, wi 1 take place at the 8.30 o’clock Mass at St. Patrick’s Church on Sunday morning. Commencing at .10.30 a.rn., the elocutionary contest, judged by Mr R. T. Bush will be held, and the oratorical contest will take place in the afternoon, the judge being Mr W. Meldrum. At 8.15 o’clock on Sunday evening the Impromptu Speech contest will be held in the St. Coiumba Hall, Mr W. Douglas Taylor being the judge. The competitions will conclude on Easter Monday morning, when the Religious Questions competition will be conducted by Very Rev. Father J. Long. Rt. Rev. Dr. M. J. Brodie, Bishop of Christchurch, will arrive on Monday afternoon, and will present the Hayward Shield to the winning team.. He will be the principal speaker at the banquet in the St. Columba Hall in the evening. Later, the visiting teams will attend the Marist Brothers’ O’d Boys’ Football Club’s Ball at Schaef’s Hall.

Most of the visitors are being bilietted during their stay in Greymouth, and the billeting committee still requires accommodation for a number of the competitors.
